Creating innovations that are successfully adopted by the NHS is not simply a question of developing the best technical solution, product or service. As a generalisation it can be stated that the technology is only 20% of the ‘exam question’, and even if you get top marks for technology you may still not pass the test. It is important that companies appreciate these issues and address them at the start of their development process.
There are important areas such as regulation, IP protection or business models where companies are in the best position to drive outcomes. There are however other important areas which require information that can only really be obtained from interacting with the NHS, such understanding coding, tariffs and patient level costings, or drivers such as paying for innovations by generating savings in year 1. Even companies that are aware of these issues have difficulties obtaining this information from an NHS system that can be opaque from the outside.
Innovate UK, NIHR and SBRI Healthcare are developing a ‘Lock & Key’ analogy to help companies understand and address these key areas to assist successful adoption by the NHS.
